stuff I’ve been drinking lately

April 13, 2007

ayingerbrauweisse.jpgAyinger Brau Weisse
Had this in DC with some friends at The Science Club. It was quite tasty and they served it in a nice tall, Ayinger wheat beer glass (like the one pictured) — nicely done, Science Club! It was a hazy gold color with a thick head — very smooth. Served with an orange, which I wasn’t big on — tasted fine by itself. 5.1 ABV

Anchor Bock
This is sort of an odd one — hadn’t seen it before, so I bought some at The Good Beer Store. It’s a deep dark brown color and has a toasted, malty taste and a tingly mouth feel. Not bad, although I’m not crazy about bocks, so I have to say it’s just ok. 5.5 ABV

Flying Dog Double Dog Double Ale
This is a strong, alcohol-y “double pale ale.” It does have a little bit of a hop kick, but malt/alcohol prevails. I drank one of these by mistake a few nights ago (meant to grab a different Flying Dog) and it definitely set me back since the ABV is 10.5 %. It’s definitely got a strong hop presence, but I’d say malt dominates. Someone on BA said it had almost a syrupy mouth feel and I’d agree — it’s quite thick.

Coppper Hook
Not super sold on this one — it’s ok, but I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way for it. 5.7 ABV

Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA
Had this again at David Greggory in DC — it’s the standard beer I get whenever I go to DG. It really is a great IPA — I have to admit I like the 90 minute better, but if you’re drinking more than one or two, the 60 is the way to go. We also always have plenty on hand when we go to Rehoboth Beach each year since Dogfish Head is right there in Milton, DE. Great beer that has some great memories associated with it. 6% ABV

Westmalle Dubbel
Very good, standard Dubbel — got this as a gift from a co-worker and enjoyed it heartily. I need to try to do a proper tasting of it, but until then I’ll just say it’s really good. 7% ABV

Carolina Brewery IPA
Carolina Brewery Stout

These were both pretty standard, as I’ve found most of the brew pub beers to be in Chapel Hill. Nothing fancy, but fine to drink when you’re there. The food and atmosphere at The Carolina Brewery are good enough that I still really like going there despite the fact that the beers are just ok.

  1. Yum! Carolina Brewery food has gotten so good. Yay for hiring a chef from the CIA. Patiently waiting for another beer update from you. Maybe from the World Beer Fest?

  2. Oops, that comment was from me but I was signed on as you. I’m STILL waiting on a WBF update though. I was there but too drunk to remember. ;)
